How to add and edit games

Here, you will find best practices regarding adding and editing games on retroplace. Please read these infos carefully — it only takes a minute or so.

Edit a game or add a new one?

Sometimes, it isn't easy at all to determine whether you should edit an existing item in the database or create a new entry from scratch. It is important, though, to o the right thing at the right time. Here is an example: You stumble upon a missing UPC or EAN code in the database. As you own the game yourself, you might want to add the missing information. Now: It is vitally important that the barcode matches exactly the release you are about to edit! The US version of any given game has a completely different code than the French version, for example. A "Director's Cut" features a different code than the original release (and so on).

If the version of the game in the database does not 100 percent match the game that you own, you need to double check that retroplace does not feature that game in which case you should add a completely new version to the database. Under no circumstances you should edit an existing game just to match it to your needs.

Be careful with EAN/UPC codes and product ids!

Especially EAN/UPC codes and product ids can be tricky to get right. Remember: In almost all cases, different region versions of a game feature different codes. If you can not find the exact version of your copy in the database, you should add a new release rather than edit an existing one!

Add new game

When adding a game, the most important thing to remember is: Make sure that all data provided is 100 percent correct. Taking good care is vitally important. All data provided must match the release you are editing. With your help, the database of retroplace gets better every day — thanks so much for contributing and sharing your knowledge!

In the menu Games you will find an entry . Clicking on it will load a form to add a new game. Here is a description of the different fields:

Field
Description

Title

The title of a game needs to be written exactly how it appears on the packshot. Add-ons like "Platinum", "Greatest Hits" are not part of a game's title. Use the field Title add-on (Special Editions etc.) to indicate special releases.

Important: If a game has a subtitle, it is seperated with a colon (not with a dash)! Examaple: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Alternative title

In case a game has been published under a different name in other countries, the English title will be used in this field.

An example: The game The Smurfs has been published as Die Schlümpfe in Germany and as Les Schtroumpfs in France. The German and French release therefor will feature the English in the field Alternative title. The English release, through, will not feature a Alternative title!

When in doubt, the English release's title is always used as the main version.

Title add-on (Special Editions etc.)

Title add-on (Special Editions etc.) is used to indicate a special release (Limited Edition, Director's Cut, Greatest Hits etc.). Otherwise the field stays empty.

System

System indicates the game's platform. The list of platforms can not be edited.

Genre

You may add up to four genres in field Genre to determine the nature of the game. In case the game you want to add is already available for other platforms or in other releases, you might want to peek what genres have been used so far.

Region

Usually, a specific release has been published in one dedicated region. But there are cases where there has been one version for the UK market and one distinct version for multiple other markets. In thoses cases, you can add up to three regions. But remember: The release has to be completely identical (including the EAN/UPC and product codes) in all those regions

Exxample: There are games that feature a PEGI and USK logo on the cover with a German description on the back cover. These are games that have been published as one release for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Developer

You mostly find the Developer in the game's manual.

Publisher

Information regarding the Publisher is usually found on the packaging or in the manual. It's important not to mix up the Developer and the Publisher: The former developed (coded) the game, the latter published it.

Release date

Release date stays empty in case you do not know when the game hit the market. wikipedia can be of great help to track down this information, though. Remember, though, that we are looking for the release date of this very release in this very region. It was not unusual for games to appear at different times in different regions. The same goes for "Platinum"- oder "Classics" versions etc.

EAN/UPC-Code

The EAN/UPC-Code (also known as barcode) is usually located on the back cover — if the game features one at all.

Product code (box)

Many games feature an additional Product code (box) and even a Product code (medium). If the game does not feature those codes, enter a 0 or a ? if you are unsure.

All data entered? Click Save. Congratulations, you did it and made the database of retroplace a bit better – thanks so much!

After you added a game, it would be awesome if you took the time to upload pictures of the front cover, the title screen and an ingame scene.

Edit game

You may edit any game by clicking the button. The rules for editing are basically the same as for adding a new game.

The lock symbol means: This information has been already verified by an admin and can not be edited anymore. But: Even admins are only humans! In case you spot a mistake, please let us know using the contact form.

Upload pictures

Adding missing pictures could not be easier: Drag and drop the picture over the respective field.

Please remember the following rules when uploading pictures:

  • - Do not use pictures made with a smart phone — the quality is just not right
  • - Pictures should have a decent resolution. The shorter edge should at least be 600 pixels wide/high. Screenshots may have lower resolutions by design, though — that's okay, of course.
  • - Only upload copyright free pictures
  • - Pictures must never feature a watermark or logo of other websites
  • - Make sure the pictures actually features the correct release. When in doubt, please do not upload a picture
  • - Finally, make sure you upload the picture in the correct slot (packshot, title screen, in-game screenshot)

Hint: During the upload process, you can crop and rotate the picture if necessary.

Thanks so much for your help! Together we make retroplace a bit better every day!
